Moving from NYC to Edgewater NJ: What No One Tells You Before You Cross the River
More space, less money, Manhattan views, a ferry to work, Whole Foods downstairs. It’s all true. But there are real adjustments no listing or enthusiastic resident will fully prepare you for.
The Good Stuff (It’s Genuinely Good)
$3,400/month in Edgewater gets a 2BR at 1,100–1,200 SF with river view, washer/dryer, pool, and parking. The same budget in the West Village: 600 SF 1BR with a view of a neighboring rooftop. The ferry is legitimately one of the best commutes in the region. The grocery situation — Whole Foods, Mitsuwa, Trader Joe’s, Target — beats most Manhattan neighborhoods.
What They Don’t Tell You: You Will Need a Car
This is the biggest adjustment for car-free Manhattan residents. Edgewater is not car-optional. Supermarkets are spread along River Road. The nearest PATH is a bus ride away. The ferry doesn’t run at 2am. Visiting friends in Brooklyn becomes a production. Budget $400–$600/month for total car costs (parking $125–$200/month plus insurance, gas).
The Social Scene Recalibration
Edgewater has excellent restaurants on River Road but not the street-life density of an urban main street. The community leans toward couples, young families, and professionals who prioritize space over nightlife proximity. Most residents settle into planned outings to Manhattan rather than spontaneous wandering — and many find the structure suits them better than they expected.
New Jersey Realities
You pay NJ income tax (graduated, top rate 10.75% on income over $1M — lower than NYC combined for most earners). You register your car in NJ. Your license becomes NJ. You will start having opinions about NJ Transit and diners.
Most NYC-to-Edgewater movers report the transition taking 3–6 months before it feels like home. By year two, the majority say they can’t imagine going back.
